Sketchbook: Design Ideas Refinement
The next page is about refining some of your favourite
designs further. This can include:

Sketches

Quick CAD drawings

Manufacturing methods

Basic Card models etc.

TASK ONE

Choose your favourite idea and redraw it in 3D.  Explore specific aspects of your idea, for example: What methods you could use to open and close the draw? How you will attach the legs to your design. How will you join your product together? How will you run the lighting cable through your lamp? How will you bend the material to get the curved shape? Repeat this for 5 designs….
REMEMBER:
■ Keep the drawings simple.
■ Make the drawings large.
■ Only use colour when it is important.
■ Use notes that ...

◆ ask questions
◆ describe things
◆ suggest materials

TASK TWO

In this task you are going to develop CAD models based upon the design refinements that you have just produced. This will allow you to see the finer details of your design as well as lots of different views of the product and allow you to make further refinements.

TASK THREE

CAD can only tell you so much! There are
sometimes problems that need solving
that CAD cannot answer. The only
alternative is to get in the workshop
and start working with real life
materials in order to solve the problems
you encounter on the way. This gives you
an opportunity to get a physical model
in you hands and look at details such as
Aesthetics, shape, proportion etc.

Models are;

Not necessarily functional (does not need to work).

Can be to any scale (usually smaller but can also be of the original size or bigger).

Used for display or/and to tests aesthetics of product.

May consist of only the exterior of the product.
