Development of Ideas: Social and Moral
This life cycle analysis discusses the relative impact on the environment of the
processes used, including energy, resources, waste production and pollution in the
manufacture of the product. Place a CAD drawing of your product and discuss as a
whole or you can go into more detail and break it down into individual components
manufactured from different materials and different production techniques
Raw Material Processing (Primary)
What material(s) is it made from?
How is this extracted/processed?
Does this give of emissions or toxins?
What effect does this have on the environment?
What tools or equipment are used in its processing?
How does this process affect the environment?
Transportation
How is it transported to its secondary processing (factory)?
What effect does this have on the environment?
Does this transportation require the use of fossil fuels?
Raw Material Secondary Production
What stock form does the material come in?
How is the stock form manufactured?
Where does the energy come from?
What emissions does this manufacturing technique give off?
How much waste is involved in the manufacture of the component?
CAD drawing of product
Or
CAD drawing of individual parts.
Transportation
How is it transported to its manufacturing factory??
What effect does this have on the environment?
Does this transportation require the use of fossil fuels?
Production method
How is the component manufactured?
How much energy is used in this process? Where does the energy come from? What emissions
does this manufacturing technique give off? How much waste is involved in the manufacture
of the component?
Transportation
How is it transported to the retail shop?
What effect does this have on the environment?
Does this transportation require the use of fossil fuels?
How is it delivered or transported to the buyers home?
Transportation
Show you product being flat-packed inefficiently and using lots of material and then
efficiently on the minimum about of material.
End of life cycle
How does the product effect the environment:
- When its being used, will it give off any emissions or pollution?
- When it is disposed of, will it be recyclable, will it be able to be reused or recycled?
E-Portfolio: Social and Moral Considerations
As a designer we need to have an understanding the impact that our product will have upon the environment, right from the beginning in terms of extracting the raw materials, throughout the manufacturing process, during its lifetime and when it is to be disposed as the end of its lifecycle.
Produce a lifecycle analysis on the relative impact upon the environment your product
will have in terms of processes used, resources, waste production and pollution.
An example of how to layout your page is provided below, feel free to change this
to suit your own project. You will need to make certain assumptions at this stage
of potential materials you will use as well as how you would mass produce your design.
