Context
The last 12 months have seen a string of high street and restaurants names go out of business. The British Retail Consortium has warned there could be up to 900,000 fewer jobs in retail and the food industry over the next decade - an industry that's the biggest employer in the private sector. The food sector is in the midst of a massive transformation, an industry that is trying to adapt to our rapidly changing shopping habits and the outcome of a global pandemic.
Design Task
You have been given the opportunity to acquire a small restaurant unit in the middle of a busy shopping centre. The unit is suitable for a range of food from a small café/ restaurant and any number of different takeaway outlets. You must develop a successful brand, advertising and promotional material to ensure the survival and success of the new business.
TOP TIPS for producing your design portfolio.
TRY to follow a theme throughout the whole portfolio
Take your time on EVERY page, there is no rush. You shouldn’t have to spend more
than an hour per page.
If you have messy handwriting, you can opt to print pages and stick them in
(font no larger than 12). Don’t copy and paste information, it’s obvious and not
worth any marks
Add your own creative flair to the portfolio
Use the examples to help you, but DO NOT copy. These are to help your remote learning.
This is work you will be assessed on
Ensure you have a notes around your sketches and design ideas to explain your thinking
Keep your handwriting, neat and a relevant size. Do not increase the size to fill
space. All text on a PC should be size 12.
All work must be produced in the A4 design portfolio provided. It must be kept neat and tidy. Avoid folding it and place it in a file or folder to keep it save and in good condition. Presentation is key to good marks. Look at the helpful tips below to completing a successful design portfolio..
In the space indicated in your folder, mind-map potential businesses for your small
retail unit. You may wish to conduct some research. Look at pop up restaurants. Research
street food restaurants, these are very on trend at the moment and break away from
what is found on the traditional high street, such as Cuban, Thai, Korean, Mexican,
Vietnamese, Moroccan etc.
In the space indicated in your folder shown below. Conclude what restaurant you will
open. From your research have you identified a gap in the market? Something that
doesn't already exist that will offer people a unique experience. Alternatively if
you have decided to open a restaurant that already exists, how will you make if different
from its main rivals? How about a restaurant based on just the starters on a menu
or just on desserts?
Produce a range of observational drawings of
- Your favourite existing logo / brand designs
This is an effective method of collecting useful information quickly. It allows you
to gain an understanding of how companies are branded and their main characteristics.
What makes an effective logo? Is is shape? Use of colour? Use of an image? What characteristics
do all popular logos have in common?
